Janko Šimrak

About the author:

Janko Šimrak (1883-1946), bishop in Žumberak, writer and editor of Žumberačke Novine.

Bishop Janko Šimrak attended local school in Mrzlo Polje, and high school in the Žumberak Greek-Catholic seminary in Zagreb. In the first two years of the seminary he studied at the Faculty of Zagreb and then went on to study in Innsbruck, Austria where he earned a doctorate. From the beginning of 1914 he worked in the editorial office of the newspaper "Žumberačke Novine", and in 1915 he became the editor-in-chief. In his rich literary-historical work, he wrote a series of works dedicated to the history of the Žumberak Uskoks and the local Greek catholic church. He wrote works in Latin and Croatian, after studying documents in Roman and Austrian archives. At the Faculty of Theology in Zagreb, he has been working as a professor of the Eastern Theology since 1924. In the period from 1931 to 1937 He published a series of annual calendar, which he called "Spomenice” (Memories). He was also the founder of the Žumberak society in 1934. Šimrak was a local patriot of his Žumberak and with his credits, in 1938, it was built the Budinjak-Sveta Jana road, and on his support the monastery of the Greek catholic nuns was built in Sošice.

"Spomenica Kalendar"

In the period from 1931 to 1937 bishop Janko Šimrak published a series of annual calendar, which he called "Spomenice” (Memories). You can order them Greek Catholic diocese from Križevci. Dr. Janko Šimrak was a frequent visitor to the Žumberak hills, people and parishes. In the village Radatović at the foot of Hranilović's lime.
